ITU Aerobar Sanity

Sanity has reached the ITU regarding aerobars in non drafting races.

Remember last year they were not going to allow bars that did not have a bridge between the extensions and they had to be below a certain length.  Effectively the rule outlawed cowhorn style bars.  The rules committee felt this insured safety because someone could get punctured by an extension.  I am all for safety but I have never heard of anyone getting punctured and we are talking about non-drafting races.  So, it makes sense that people are not crashing in bunches leading to some kind of puncture wound.  In other words, it seemed to be a rule that did nothing to prevent any kind of injury.

Here is an update (Courtesy of TriBC):

"ITU HANDLEBAR/AEROBAR UPDATE (Non-Drafting Races Only): Any aerobar is acceptable providing it does not extend any further than the leading edge of the front tire. Bridging is not required. Open bar-ends must be plugged. Brakes must not face forward."
